Four More Years

It's Blair and his cronies for another four years. Not that Howard and his mob would have been any better. Kennedy is slowly providing an alternative but at present progress it will take the Liberal Democrats 90 years to run a government.

Whatever, we have managed without politicians for the last month, while they all pumped hands and kissed babies in desperate attempts to persuade us all to vote for them. At 60% we are not playing the democracy game very well. That may be because the politicians are not helping but I suspect the real cause of the malaise rests with the bureaucracy.

My local council has just lost the fourth Chief Executive in four years. This one lasted just six months before deciding she may be better off elsewhere. There rests the real problem. Our council officials are now too concerned with their own careers. Add to that the interminable hours wasted by our councillors sitting on committees. The poor dears are sent huge bundles of papers every week, forced to attend too many meetings, where decisions are little more than rubber stamped. Ask a councillor to tell their staff 'No' and they quack in their shoes. The council officials, and no doubt the civil servants, and if not them the political advisors, now have our elected representatives tied down where they want them.

No doubt President Blair will enjoy it all but something needs to be done to involve the people in decision making, and we have the machinery available to all that that - all that is needed is the political will. Perhaps the civil servants will recognise the logic of all this - one day.
